STRAP Chairman’s Update – 15 January 2022

Chairman’s Update – 15 January 2022

Dear All
  • CAMRA National Pub Saving Award
  • Presentation of Certificate 13th February 2pm at the Railway Arms
  • Railway Arms entered into the 2022 Good Beer Guide
  • Notice of Annual General Meeting. 29th January 2022. Fairycroft House and by Zoom.
Many of you will have seen the news in the local papers concerning our runner’s up placing in CAMRA’s national Pub Saving Award (https://camra.org.uk/pubs-and-clubs/awards/pub-saving-award/). We can all be very proud and delighted that STRAP and SWCP Ltd’s efforts over so many years have been recognised in this way. This year’s field has been the strongest to date and to be recognised at a time when Community- owned Pubs have become such a strong sector of the economy, particularly throughout East Anglia, is especially pleasing. This local strength is of course epitomised by the dogged determination shown by the saviours of the Blue Bell Inn in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk, this year’s winners, and we extend our heartiest congratulations to the “Ring The Blue Bell Again” campaign (Home | Blue Bell Community (bluebellstokeferry.org)) for the fantastic work that they have put in in the face of tremendous odds. It was a great pleasure to welcome visitors from the Bluebell to the Railway last Sunday afternoon for lunch on their way to a concert at Saffron Hall and to learn of their Saffron Walden connections over a drink afterwards. It should not be forgotten of course that the Three Horseshoes in Helions Bumpstead is community-owned and that the Plunkett Foundation sponsored East Anglian Community Pub Network includes 19 community-owned pubs scattered across the region.

As co-ordinator of the Pub Saving Award, Paul Ainsworth, said: “This year’s winners both have long journeys behind them, and are two examples of superb campaigning to save beloved local pubs – only made more difficult due to the coronavirus restrictions throughout 2020 and 2021. It just goes to show what can be achieved when a community bands together to make a difference, and we are excited to see what is next for the Blue Bell and Railway Arms.”

The presentation of a certificate is scheduled for 2pm on Sunday 13th February at the Railway Arms and it would be great if as many of you as possible could be there to grace the photograph. Being able to add the certificate to that recording our entry in the 2022 CAMRA Good Beer Guide will, of course, be an extra pleasure.

All this talk of celebration, community spirit and great achievement brings me to the subject of our 2022 Annual General Meeting which will be held on 29th January at Fairycroft House and on Zoom from 4pm-5.30pm. Shareholders are invited to attend, either in person or from the comfort of wherever in the world you happen to be via your network. Please note that with 510+ shareholders we need an attendance in the mid 50’s in order for the meeting to be quorate so please put the date in your diary. Zoom meeting link and details to follow, Notice of AGM below.

Cheers
Dave
